Ask the Advisors

Q:  What do you mean by using a diversified index-type investing approach?  What about highly ranked mutual funds?

A:  Study after study has shown that over intermediate and long periods of time, a "buy the market" approach achieves a more stable and a higher return than attempts to find those few active fund managers that can "beat the market."  Our investing process is to diversify your assets over a broad range of asset classes (large cap, small cap, international, REITs, etc.) in a proportion that matches the level of risk and return that we agree on together.  These proportions are then adjusted periodically to correct imbalances in the portfolio. It is clear however, that at times there are significant under and over-valuations in asset classes when reviewed historically and by valuation measures.  We buy the undervalued and avoid the over-valued when such a situation appears.
